In this workshop we will explore the use of a palette knife when developing a landscape painting. I will guide each student in developing his or her own unique interpretation of nature. The goal is to learn how to edit the scene and grasp the essentials. We will focus on how to simplify the painting process by building forms with value while observing how to use color to affect intensity and contrast. Emphasis will be on learning to organize light and dark patterns and to see the landscape less literally and more as an exciting arrangement of shapes and colors. You will be encouraged to show excitement and emotions to bring your painting alive. Express yourself in a bold and colorful way. Sheri will share her insight into the way in which she interprets the Texas landscape. We will be painting from photographs of scenes from her plein air experiences. There will be demonstrations and plenty of individual attention.

Pienza Farmhouse by Sheri Jones

Pienza Farmhouse
6x8 oil on Raymar canvas panel

I painted this early one morning before most of the participants of the workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams were up. This was a farmhouse we could see from the yard of the villa we were staying at in the Tuscany area of Italy. They had a great olive grove and lots of cypress trees all planted in rows.  I loved trying to capture this on canvas.  This is available for purchase. $75.00

Pienza Morning Light by Sheri Jones

Pienza Morning Light
10x8 oil on Raymar canvas panel

I painted this in the small town of Pienza, Italy during a workshop with Niki Gulley.  It was a great location with nice light and atmosphere. I loved the charm of this restaurant door and the flowers in the balcony. The longer we painted the better the light became and the more I fell in love with this place.
This is available for purchase. $200.00

Vista over Montepulciano by Sheri Jones

Vista over Montepulciano
8x10 oil on Raymar canal panel

This was painted in a small Italian town of Montepulciano at an outlook at the Vista. I was fortunate to paint two from this incredible location. We went with Niki Gulley and her husband, Scott Williams thru Art Treks. Niki teaches plein air painting and Scott teaches a photography class. They do their homework and know where to guide the artist for inspiration. They do a great job and are excellent host.  I can't wait to plan another trip!

The Sanctuary of San Biagio by Sheri Jones

The Sanctuary of San Biagio
10x8 oil on canvas
Sold
I painted this on the vista overlooking The Sanctuary of San Biagio in Montepulciano, Italy. This chapel was constructed between 1518 and 1545 by local craftsman. It is a work of art and was a joy to paint. We had great weather on this particular day with temperatures in the 80s. It was a great spot picked out by Niki Gulley during her workshop.

Texas Lantana by Sheri Jones

Texas Lantana
8x6 Acrylic on paper

I love to have homemade cards on hand and had run out. I needed one for a workmate and got busy. I picked the lantana out of my garden and really enjoyed painting this. It was such a switch to paint with the water based paint. I painted this in layers with a wide brush and felt a new sense of creativity.
