El Tesoro Falls, Contemporary Landscape Painting by Sheri Jones

El Tesoro Falls

11x14 oil on ray mar canvas panel

I created this from a couple of field studies and a photos from El Tesoro.  El Tesoro is a camp for kids in the Granbury Area. A lovely river runs through it with colorful views.  A group of plein air painters were granted access.  We hung out, painted and enjoyed the solitude of this camp.

30% Chance of Rain by Sheri Jones

30% Chance of Rain

9x12 oil on Raymar canvas

I looked at the forecast this morning and it called for 30% chance of rain so I preceded on to find a good painting location. There was a lot of lightening out to , but I keep going. It turned into a 100% chance of rain before I ever set up.  I painted under the back door on my CRV and stayed dry. Starting before the sun comes up is a challenge, because you can't see colors. This is another good reason to place colors in the same location every time you lay paints out.  This was painted in Granbury, not too far from home.

This is available for purchase. $250.00

Sun Around the Bend by Sheri Jones

Sun Around the Bend

11x14 oil on canvas

I painted this in the studio and was inspired from a photo I took. The foreground in the photo was really dark and hard to read. Experience and a good memory helped pull this one together. The combination of the beautiful sunrise and the colorful wildflowers were what attracted me to the scene. This is available for purchase at Your Private Collection Art Gallery, Granbury, Texas

Come Join me

In this workshop we will explore the use of a palette knife when developing a landscape painting. I will guide each student in developing his or her own unique interpretation of nature. The goal is to learn how to edit the scene and grasp the essentials. We will focus on how to simplify the painting process by building forms with value while observing how to use color to affect intensity and contrast. Emphasis will be on learning to organize light and dark patterns and to see the landscape less literally and more as an exciting arrangement of shapes and colors. You will be encouraged to show excitement and emotions to bring your painting alive. Express yourself in a bold and colorful way. Sheri will share her insight into the way in which she interprets the Texas landscape. We will be painting from photographs of scenes from her plein air experiences. There will be demonstrations and plenty of individual attention.
Beginner to advanced-Class size limited to 10 students.

Twenty Minute Peppers by Sheri Jones

Twenty Minute Peppers

30x40 oil on canvas

I really do dig painting from life and the bright colors of bell peppers were as easy draw. I set the timer for 20 minutes and stopped at that and haven't touched them yet. Each square is 10x10. I premixed my colors and was prepared for the limited time. Working with a palette knife, the paint was flying. It was an exciting painting for me.    It really is a great practice and fun way to test your observation skills. This is available for purchased. $1,600.00

I set the time for each lemon and stopped after 10 minutes.  Exercises like this teach you to work quickly, observe and record only the essentials.  You should try it sometime, it is a fun exercise.  I did have my paints premixed and ready to go before setting the timer. I did it over the course of several days too. Lemons keep nicely in the fridge. This is available for purchase. $150.00

Summer Hydrangeas by Sheri Jones

Summer Hydrangeas

8x10 oil on canvas

This was painted in the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens yesterday morning. I met up with "The Doug Club" and about 10 other artist.

I used water based oil paints and a really limited palette.  I could not mix the right pink, so I  introduced a magenta  for the flowers.  I am limiting my palette and switching to water based paints in anticipation of a trip to Italy. The combination of both made this painting a real challenge. I did paint it with a palette knife and that was familiar. This is available for purchase. $200.00
